Raising Refounders Hawaii

Hawaii was the last state to be admitted to the Union.  This happened on August 21, 1959 after many years as a US territory.  Hawaii consists of more than 100l islands in the South Pacific Ocean, although most of the islands are too small for people to live on. It has a total are of about 6,423 square miles and a population of over 1 million people.  Tourism is now Hawaii's main economy, however in years past agriculture was also a major contributor.  They still grow crops such as macadamia nuts, pineapple, and sugar cane.  The capital city is Honolulu, which is located on the island of O'ahu.

Hawaii is special in another way - it is the only state that is not located on the North American continent.  How it became a state is controversial - with many native Hawaiians believing that the ousting of Queen Liliuokalani in 1893, just two years after she took control.  This act was backed by the United States Marines.

Today, Hawaii is a bustling tourist center filled with people from all over the world.
