Colorado is a Spanish word that means "colored red" and came from the red sandstone canyons that host the strong Colorado River that begins high in the mountains and ends in the Gulf of California. Colorado became a state on August 1, 1876 and was the 38th state to do so. The major waterways are the Colorado, Arkansas, and South Platte Rivers. The western part of the state is the home to some of the most beautiful places in the Rocky Mountains; while the eastern part of the state is flat prairie ranch and farm land. Colorado has always been an agricultural state and part of that history can be viewed in the movie below.
The capital city is Denver and the state spread out over an area of about 103,700 square miles. The city of Colorado Springs is home to the famous Pikes Peak which can be seen for hundreds of miles across the state.
