The great state of Ohio was accepted into the Union on March 1, 1803 and was the 17th state to do so. Ohio's capital city is Columbus and the approximate area of the state is 40,948 square feet with a population of about 11.5 million people making it the 7th most populous state in the nation. Since I grew up in Ohio you get to hear more about how great it is than normal - I guess that's my perk for being the webmaster.
Ohio is filled with forest and farmland and has a long tradition among the Native Americans. The name Ohio came from the Iroquois name of the major river (which is the Ohio River) which means big or great. So you see - it REALLY IS the Great state of Ohio!
Ohio has given birth to more astronauts than any other state in the union. These famous pioneers include Neil Armstrong, John Glenn, and James Lovell. Armstrong was the first man to step foot on the moon and John Glenn was the first man to orbit the earth. Ohio is also the home to one of the spectacular ancient Indian burial mounds in the country. It is suspected to have been built by the Fort Ancient culture around 1070 AD and is in the image of a great open-mouthed serpent that winds and coils for more than 1,300 feet. At the head appears a large oval structure which may represent an egg bready to be swallowed.
Ohio's northern border is the Great Lake Erie, the shallowest of the Great Lakes, and is often called the North Shore.
