New Hampshire was one of the 13 original colonies and became the 9th state to be admitted to the Union on June 21, 1788. It was unusual at the time just prior to the Declaration of Independence because it actually formed a government totally separate from Britain on January 5, 1776. It is one of the smaller states with an area of only 8,968 square miles and a population of almost 1.3 million. The capital city is Concord and the main rivers flowing through the state are the Connecticut and the Merrimack. It does have an interesting motto - some might say it is a little "revolutionary" in these times - Live Free or Die.
Live FREE or Die. Now, why would one of the original 13 colonies have such a negative attitude about servitude? Hmmm...maybe it has something to do with KING GEORGE.
Today the New Hampshire economy runs on tourism to any one of the beautiful places and the manufacturing industry - especially furniture, paper, and other forest products. In fact, forests cover about 80% of the state. Granite is another natural resource in New Hampshire and it is quarried to make buildings.
