Massachusetts was one of the original 13 colonies - arguably the most important of the 13 in terms of the Revolutionary War. The colony was founded by the Pilgrims in December of 1620 when they made the courageous and dangerous voyage from Europe to the New World, looking for a place to practice their religion without persecution. They landed at a place that was to be named Plymouth, it is situated on the Northwest side of the Cape Cod Bay. Since that time the area that was to become Massachusetts filled up with more colonists, namely the Puritans.
The capital city is Boston, which is also the largest city in the state. Prior to the Revolutionary War there were several patriot groups that were based out of the Boston area such as the Sons of Liberty. You may be familiar with the likes of John Hancock, Samuel Adams, Paul Revere and John Adams - all of which were prominent Bostonian Revolutionaries that played major roles in the war against Britain.
The shot heard 'round the world also came from a town in Massachusetts after General gage sent British troops to Concord to capture John Hancock and Samuel Adams who had been storing arms in anticipation of a conflict with the British. They were met in Lexington by a group of patriots, words were exchanged and then bullets - leaving several people dead and more wounded. They marched on to Concord only to find Hancock and Adams gone (being warned by Paul Revere and other) and the arms store empty. They were now a very tired bunch of soldiers who had to march back to Boston. When they reached Lexington they were met by the Colonists who drove them into a retreat, killing half their forces along the way. And with these events the American Revolution began.
