Florida was admitted to the Union on March 3, 1845 making it the 27th state to do so. From its humble beginnings as a swamp-filled Spanish colony, to its present day status as one of the most beautiful states in the Union for tourists and residents alike. With an area of about 54,000 square miles and a population of just over 17 million, Florida is a medium sized state with a high population. The capital city is Tallahassee, but there are several other major cities in the state such as Miami, Orlando, Tampa, and Jacksonville.
Florida also has my graduate school alma mater, The University of Florida Gators!
Florida played a big role in the Space Race of the 1960's and 70's with the Kennedy Space Center. Today, that center is still in charge of the launching of spacecraft, although President Obama severely decapitated the program when he refused to fund the Space Shuttle successor program, leaving the United States with no ability to transport equipment astronauts to and from space for the first time in 50 years.
