Raising Refounders Alabama

Alabama was admitted to the Union on December 14, 1819 - they were the 22nd state to do so.  The state has an approximate population of about 4,530,200 and encompasses about 50,744 square miles.  The capital city is Montgomery and the major rivers are the Alabama and the Tombigbee.

Alabama got its name from a Native American tribe called the Alibamu.

The climate in Alabama is hot and humid but the terrain can vary from north and south.  In the north there are pine trees, forests, rivers, lakes, and hills.  While in the south there are plenty of swamps, beaches and channels of slow moving water called the bayou.

The state was built on the back of their agricultural goods - mostly cotton and peanuts and was the focal point in the Civil Rights movement in the 1950's and 60's when Rosa Parks refused to move to the back of the bus in 1955.

Alabama is also home to Space Camp which is housed in Huntsville.  The U.S Space and Rocket Museum is also maintained at that site and is the largest space museum in the world.
