On November 2, 1889 North Dakota became the 39th state admitted to the Union. With an area of about 70,000 square miles and a population of only 634,000 people, North Dakota is the 48th most populous state - or only two other states have LESS people than North Dakota! Do you know which states they are?
The capital city is Bismarck and the major rivers are the Missouri and the Red Rivers. The name Dakota comes from a Sioux word for "friend". North Dakota is known for its rich Native American heritage, large sprawling cattle ranches, huge wheat crop and the famous Louis and Clark Expedition.
In October of 1804, sent by President Thomas Jefferson, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark came upon a native American village in what would become central North Dakota. The explorers were exhausted and decided to make camp there for the winter. During this time a French-Canadian explorer Toussaint Charbonneau and his wife, a Native American named Sacagawea, also decided to make camp. When the spring came these new explorers joined the expedition. Sacagawea ended up becoming a valuable asset on this trip! She had many wilderness survival skills and understood the land and people. This helped Lewis and Clark's historic expedition become a huge success!
