Raising Refounders Missouri

Missouri was admitted into the Union on August 10, 1821 - making it the 24th state.  The capital city is Jefferson City, which is located smack dab in the middle of the state.  Kansas City is the largest town, and is shared with Kansas City, Kansas (a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri) on the Western edge of the state - along the Missouri River.

Missouri is famous for its Ozark Mountains, country music (especially Branson, Missouri - which is like a Las Vegas for country music fans!) and Mark Twain, otherwise known as Samuel Clemens.  The Ozarks cover much of the south half of Missouri and an large part of northwest and north central Arkansas. The region also extends westward into northeast Oklahoma and extreme southeast Kansas. The famous young adult book "Where the Red Fern Grows", by Wilson Rawls, takes place in the Ozarks - although the main character live in a town in Oklahoma which is not far from the Missouri border.

Branson, Missouri has been in the entertainment business for more than 50 years after Hugo and Mary Herschend leased Marble Cave and started holding square dances in it. 10 years later they opened Silver Dollar City, a recreation frontier town that had a battle between the Hayfields and McCoys as the main attraction.  From there the idea of Branson as a depot for country music lovers blossomed into the tourist attraction it is today.  With more than 40 theatres and 100 shows and productions, Branson is a very popular vacation spot for families.

Samuel Clemens wrote his famous stories centered around life on the Mississippi.  His beloved stories about Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn are still popular today.  He was born in Hannibal, Missouri in 1835 and today visitors can tour his childhood home that inspired his writing.
