Raising Refounders Mississippi

Mississippi was admitted to the Union on December 10, 1817 and was the 20th state to do so.  With a total are of about 46, 900 square miles and a population of almost 3 million people, Mississippi is the 31st most populous state.  The principle waterway is, of course, the Mississippi River!  From its humble beginnings in Minnesota to it mouth at the Gulf of Mexico, the Mississippi River covers more than 2,000 miles and is the second longest river in America, only the Missouri is longer.  In Mississippi's early days the river was the lifeblood for many people.  The capital city is Jackson.

Following Britain's victory in the Seven Years War the Mississippi became the border between the British and Spanish Empires. The Treaty of Paris (1763) gave Great Britain rights to all land east of the Mississippi and Spain rights to land west of the Mississippi.  Mark Twain's book, Life on the Mississippi, covered the steamboat lifestyle and Twain's affection for the mighty river.  He was also a Steamboat "pilot" and spent a lot of time describing how one should navigate the ever changing Mississippi channel.

Mississippi is known for more than it's river namesake though (which means father of the waters) - it has a perfect climate (wet and warm) for growing everything from cotton to magnolias.  Elvis Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi in 1935 - he went on to become one of the most famous people in the world, and even though Tennessee takes all the credit for Elvis (that was where his famous home Graceland is located), it was in Mississippi where he had his humble beginnings.
