Michigan became a state on January 26, 1837 and was the 26th state to do so. The capital city is Lansing and the state encompasses about 56,800 square miles with a population of about 10 million people. Michigan is situated so that 4 of the 5 Great Lakes surround it with Lakes Huron and Erie to the East and Lakes Michigan and Superior to the West and North respectively.
Michigan also has two peninsulas, the lower and the upper. They are connected by a 5 mile bridge across the Straits of Mackinac and together they have more than 3,000 miles of shoreline.
In recent decades Michigan has been one of the hardest hit states economically - with a 2010 unemployment rate that is among the highest in the country and real estate prices for some houses in the Detroit area selling for only a few hundred dollars. City officials and private owners have started to demolish entire city blocks to attempt to jumpstart a housing recovery.
