Raising Refounders Iowa

Iowa was admitted into the Union on December 28, 1846 - making it the 23rd state to do so.  Iowa has two major rivers flowing through it - the Mississippi and the Missouri.  While the Mississippi is the longest river in North America at 2,320 miles long, the Missouri is the second longest at 2,341 miles.  The name Iowa comes from a Native American word that means "beautiful land".  Both of the major rivers provide the necessary irrigation and transportation for crops grown throughout the state.

Iowa is the bread basket of America with its major industry being agriculture - from corn to pigs - this state produces more food than many countries!  That's because more than 90% of the total 55,869 square miles is farmland!  Most of Iowa's citizens live in or near the capital city of Des Moines and the state has a total population of about 3 million people.
