Raising Refounders Arkansas

Arkansas, like many of the U.S. states, comes from a Native American word, which in this case, means "downstream people".  It was admitted to the Union on June 15, 1836 as the 25 state.  The capital city is Little Rock, which is located in the center of the state.  It covers an approximate area of about 52,000 square miles and has a population of about 2.7 million people.  The main waterways which flow through the state are the Arkansas, the Mississippi, and the White Rivers.

Arkansas is home to Crater of Diamonds State Park which is the only public diamond field in the United States.  People from all over can come to the park and search for diamonds and to date more than 70,000 diamonds have been dug up.  Arkansas is also famous for the rice fields.  Due to the low wet areas along the Mississippi are perfect for growing this grain which prefers to have its roots underground.

Arkansas is also known for being the home state to William Jefferson Clinton, the 42nd president of the United States.  Clinton was only the second president to be impeached, preceded by Andrew Johnson from Tennessee in 1868, for the crime of obstruction of justice.

The first European to reach Arkansas was the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto and Arkansas is one of several U.S. states formed from the territory purchased from Napoleon Bonaparte in the Louisiana Purchase, initiated by Thomas Jefferson in 1803, for the sum of about 15 million dollars.
