Unit Twelve – The Thirteen English Colonies

You have now read a little bit about the history of each of the original thirteen American colonies.  These include (from North to South):

1.    New Hampshire
2.    Massachusetts (and its annex Maine)
3.    New York
4.    Rhode Island Thirteen Colonies
5.    Connecticut
6.    New Jersey
7.    Pennsylvania
8.    Delaware
9.    Maryland
10.  Virginia
11.  North Carolina
12.  South Carolina
13.  Georgia

In this unit you will spend some time getting to know each of the thirteen colonies.  You will be asked to provide the date of founding, the name of the major pioneer responsible for founding, the major industry of the time, and who or what the colony was named for.

Do not get distracted by statehood – these colonies have yet to fight for their freedoms.  The state flower and song is irrelevant right now.  Simply concentrate on the colonial period leading up to the Revolutionary War.

Go to the Social Studies for Kids website to obtain your information.  Click on each colony to get specific information.  Once you are on the colony page you can find more detailed information by clicking the links under the “More on Colonial (fill in the state name here)” title.

When you are done with your exploration of all of the colonies you will choose just one to do a report on.  Fill out the report sheet and then write about 500 words about your colony. Include the important information you found in the initial assignment, plus any other interesting details that gives insight into how they lived.  Study the maps below before moving on.
